Konami and Moais go way back, even before Gradius. The 1984 arcade game Pandora's Palace includes them.

At the start of the game, Pandora's Box is opened, Moais come flying out!

And later on, Moai's are one of the enemies you encounter.

And all this a year before Gradius was released.
