Fuel Consumption Calculator!

Underline

Bike Versus Car:

I was curious as to what sort of fuel consumption I was getting on my bike and how it compared to my car, (which was more economical bike or car) so I devised a simple method to check what was best. Although it means initially completely filling both vehical fuel tanks to the brim which can be quite costly depending on how much fuel there is in the tanks to start with the calculation does work and is actually more accurate than my cars trip computer which bases the readout on what the car is doing at the time not what it has done on an average journey for example if I reset the computer and coast with the clutch in I can get 99.9 MPG which is definately wrong.
Before using the fuel calculator there is however some initial preparation required to bring the vehicle to a known condition so the calculations can be as accurate as possible.

Method One:
  • Firstly fill the vehicle with fuel until the pump clicks off, (this guarantees a full tank of fuel).
  • Set the trip counter to zero.
  • At the next fill up use the same fuel pump if possible and fill it up in the same manner.
  • Note the fuel cost per Litre eg. 119.9.
  • Note how many Litres it took to fill the tank eg. 12.18 Litres.
  • Take a note of the figure on the trip counter before setting to zero eg. 127.0 Miles.
From this data we know how far the vehicle has traveled and how much fuel has been used, enter the figures into the calculator below.

How much is the fuel per litre: (eg 119.9).
How many litres to fill up the fuel tank: (eg 12.18).
How many miles has the vehicle traveled: (eg 127.0)

The calculated fuel cost to fill up should have been (in £'s)
The calculated Miles Per Gallon (MPG) is
The calculated Miles Per Litre (MPL) is

This simple fuel calculator works out roughly how much fuel you are using to travel a certain distance and gives the result in Fuel Cost, Miles Per Gallon and Miles Per Litre.

Note:
Due to the way in which the filling station fuel pumps display values that are rounded up or down slight differences in results can occur depending on what calculator you have used.
These calculated results are only an approximate result from the displayed fuel pump data at the filling station.

Data must be entered in to each of the three data input boxes above the "Calculate Consumption" button or else the "NaN" (Not a Number) error condition displays!

Method Two:

If you prefer to note the fuel cost per litre, the cost to fill up and the mileage traveled you can enter the data into this calculator instead.
  • Note how much it cost to fill the tank eg. £30.00.
  • Take a note of the figure on the trip counter before setting to zero eg. 250.3 Miles.
From this data we know how far the vehicle has traveled and how much the fuel to fill up cost, enter the figures into the calculator below.

How much is the fuel per litre: (eg 119.9).
How much did it cost to fill up the fuel tank: (eg £30.00).
How many miles has the vehicle traveled: (eg 250.3)

The calculated fuel to fill up should have been (Litres)
The calculated Miles Per Gallon (MPG) is
